Program Description

Program of Study: MA1630 Robotics

Robotic Engineering is a high school level course that is appropriate for 10th – 12th grade

students who are interested in the design, engineering and programming of robots. Robotic Engineering focuses heavily on prior knowledge from STEM related courses. The students will receive a comprehensive overview of robotic systems and the subsystems that comprise them. The Robotic curriculum follows The Intelitek Robotics Engineering Curriculum (REC) and provides a comprehensive study of engineering concepts including:

  • Physics
  • Programming
  • Mechanical systems
  • Electrical and electronics systems

This course provides opportunities for students to study and apply basic principles of materials, mechanisms, structures, electricity, electronic control, fluid power, computer control, and graphic communication and how they can be integrated and used to solve a variety of complex technical challenges. This course also will introduce students to computer‐aided drafting using CAD software.

The majority of coursework is taught in an industry setting, providing students with hands‐on experience. Students will also be exposed to skills to develop positive work ethics.

Competitions

VEX Competition Teams design and build a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more. Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels and culminate at the VEX Robotics World Championship each April!

Entrance Requirements

Students must enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or a senior at a Kanawha County high school.
Students should also have grade-appropriate math skills.
